Nightly Adventures in Cooking For One
By Joe Yonan
Most recipes are designed to serve four, six, or eight people and aren't easily scaled down to serve just one diner. Serve Yourself is food journalist Joe Yonan's collection of recipes for tasty single-serving meals that are simple to prepare but do not skimp on freshness and flavor. The volume's 100 recipes are organized into 10 chapters, some quite quirky: eggs; tacos; rice, grains, and noodles; sweet potatoes and toppings; things to do with a roast chicken; cutlets; seafood; sandwiches; desserts; and basic recipes. Dishes include international inspirations as well as unique takes on American favorites such as Thai Fried Rice with Runny Egg, Scallop Ceviche with Lemongrass and Ginger, Tuna Sandwich with Lemon Confit and Arugula, and Sugar and Spice Baked Sweet Potato. Sidebars offer friendly tips for shopping for one, ideas for leftover management, and advice about cooking techniques and equipment.
